Ethiopia is welcoming a new year as celebrations take place across the country for Enkutatash, the Ethiopian New Year, which marks the beginning of the year 2019 according to the Ethiopian calendar.
Observed on Meskerem 1, Enkutatash is traditionally celebrated on September 11, with the date shifting to September 12 in certain years following an Ethiopian leap year.
Ethiopia follows a unique ancient solar calendar that differs from the Gregorian calendar used in much of the world. The Ethiopian calendar consists of 13 months—12 months of 30 days each, followed by a short 13th month known as Pagume, which contains five or six days depending on the year.
Beyond marking the start of a new year, Enkutatash is an important cultural celebration that reflects Ethiopia’s rich history, traditions and heritage.
